      At Fort Lauderdale Select, now Team Rush, the armband came early. He has captained every team he has played for since under 8.

      One day, a national team shirt

      Ask Maverick what he wants from football and the answer never changes. He wants to play for his country. He is lucky enough to have two he loves.

      Ireland

      Ireland is his father's country. It gave him his name, his love of the green shirt and his first football dreams.

      Slovakia

      Slovakia is his mother's country and his home. It gave him his coaches, his clubs and the chance to become the player he is today.

      He does not see it as a choice. Both are his, he is proud of both, and his job is the same either way: keep working until he is good enough to be asked.

      Family is everything

      Nobody scores 91 goals alone. Behind every early alarm, long drive and hot touchline is a family that knows exactly what this takes, because every one of them has done it too.

      • Mum, Lucia

        Lucia is his number one supporter, and where Slovakia comes from. A rock and roll acrobatic dancer as a girl and later a model, she knows what discipline looks like from the inside. We suspect the balance comes from her too.

      • Dad

        Emmet O'Brien raced professionally in the FIA World Touring Car Championship, the European Touring Car Cup and GT3. He knows about pressure, and about being ready when the lights go out.

      • Big brother Hayden

        Hayden O'Brien is the 2026 Slovak national rifle shooting champion and part of the Slovak national squad. Competition starts at the dinner table in this house.
